Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) is a three-dimensional radiographic tool that helps the dentist visualize teeth and surrounding bone structures of the head and neck region. It allows the better orientation of the tooth structures.
How does CBCT help the dentist?
It supports the dentist in diagnosis and treatment plan by having its basic principles as it provides 3D orientation. In many scenarios, CBCT helps in the treatment of certain conditions such as,
• Dental trauma: After a traumatic event, dental fractures can be detected with the CBCT
• TMJ issues:
Fractures and other abnormalities can be identified, CT scan can be avoided and radiation is less in CBCT than CT
• Dental caries and root canal-related issues:
Proximal caries is well visualized but it is not essential in all cases.
Is CBCT safe for children?
Children are particularly vulnerable to the effects of radiation because of the ongoing development of their bodies. Even though CBCT radiation doses are generally minimal, as less radiation as possible should be used in dental health treatment as per ALARA guidelines. The patient should be wearing a lead apron and thyroid collar to avoid scattered x-ray radiation
